The Hartford Inheritance by Jane A. Hobden

Jealousy, lies and deceit follow the Hartford family all the way down the line

Hobden does an amazing job telling the story of Kitty Harmer, whose life gets turned upside down by a startling inheritance of a manor house in rural England from a family she never knew she had. With her twin sister gone from her life since she was 12, she goes about falling in love with her new life.

Kitty’s fairytale story is hard to swallow at first because, knowing the genre, you know hers won’t be a happy ending. Hobden not only takes us through Kitty’s life but the lives of the ancestry that’s interlaced in her happy tale bring about an ominous undertone. As a reader, even though you are cheering for Kitty to get her happy ending, the most thrilling part is waiting for her story to take the dark turn that you know is coming.

Hobden’s examination of each family member shows how two people can develop so differently even when living in the same household. History repeats itself as Hobden goes from one generation to the next, weaving a tale of jealousy and heartache that befalls every female member of the Hartford family. Will Kitty’s story reach the same eerie conclusion.

By the end there were still some answered questions but Hobden’s tale is an enjoyable and thrilling run through history.
